My Healing Hair Prosthesis Services

I was approached by a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer. She asked if I could help her when the inevitable time came to cut off her hair, and if I could somehow attach her braids to the inside of her hat.

I approached several local hair salons for hair donations so that I could design and perfect the process that would create the highest quality hair prostheses. After, creating braids for my friend, and seeing how much comfort they gave her, I knew that I wanted to help as many people as I could with this same concept.

Being in my mid-forties, I am finding myself surrounded by friends and relatives with cancer. Having gone through a devastating loss of one of my closest friends on my thirty-second birthday, my eyes have been opened to how close of a connection we all have to someone affected by this horrific disease.

 Prothesis FAQs

Why Healing Hair prothesis as opposed to a wig?

If you had to choose between your own hair, someone else’s, or even synthetic, which would you choose?

Hair loss in women, especially, can be absolutely devastating for the sufferers self image and emotional well being. It may come as a shock to find out just how big a deal hair loss can be during cancer treatments. For some patients, hair loss is the thing they dread most about cancer treatment. Having your own hair is like having your own security blanket in a time of emotional stress and trauma. The individual is already dealing with so many emotions and an incredible transformation is about to occur, not one they had in store.

How did My Healing Hair come to be?

For many months after my first attempt at making a set of braids for my friend, I scoured the internet for research on chemotherapy hair loss. I looked for anything that might be “like” this process, and didn’t find anything. I went to all my local salons and left a brown paper bag with a flyer attached to the front of the bag explaining what “My Healing Hair” is and asking the community to donate their cut hair to use for research and testing new ways to make hair prosthetics. The response was amazing! I went in thinking that it would take MONTHS to get enough hair to start testing; I walked away that same day with a large bag of neatly braded hair bundles! I quickly went to work designing a “jig” for a gluing station. This station would help clamp the hair into place and stabilize the hair, while gluing. I started getting calls, emails, Facebook messages asking if I needed more donated hair. The more testing I did, the better the results were! The hair in braids, bangs and back of the head crown pieces, became very stable, pliable and more authentic looking.

How long does my hair need to be?

Any length over 5 inches works best,

The shorter the hair, the less your going to see coming out from underneath your hat. Make an appointment with your stylist. Have them wash your hair, clean up any split ends, and braid your hair in at least 2 braids, 4 is ideal.

What are Healing Hair protheses made of?

The Healing Hair uses your own hair or donated hair that matches yours, and soft wicking material to wrap the hair in for comfort against the sensitive skin of the scalp.

We use the highest quality, nontoxic, and biodegradable waterproof glue. It is extremely flexible.

How do I care for My Healing Hair?

You can absolutely wash your hair prosthetic. Simply remove the piece(s) from your hat, and wash under cool water with your favorite shampoo and conditioner.

Towel dry by ringing the excess water out wrapped up in a My Healing Hair’s micro fiber towel, hang it with a 2 clip hanger, or lie flat on a towel. My Healing Hair prosthesis is your hair and can be styled, curled, and straitened the way you normally would.

What type of hats can be used?

My Healing Hair’s hair prosthetics are interchangeable in hats that we convert for your prosthetic insert. Most hats can be used for your hair prosthetic. All hats need to be fully enclosed it the back, so baseball hats will not work for this application, unless they're completely enclosed. Send in 2 of your own hats, or you can purchase any of our My Healing Hair’s hats. You can send in more of your hats to be converted for a small fee.
